Jones, E. Interpreters and Translators. Occupational Outlook Quarterly v. 46 no. 2 (Summer 2002) p. 22-9

Abstract: Interpreters and translators are highly skilled workers who enable the cross-cultural communication necessary in today's society. Although knowing at least two languages is a prerequisite, it takes more than bilingualism to succeed in these occupations. Interpreters and translators must relay concepts and ideas between languages, thoroughly comprehend the subject matters in which they work, and remain sensitive to the cultures associated with their languages of expertise. Interpretation and translation are different professions, each requiring a distinct set of skills and aptitudes. The writer discusses the specialty areas of both professions and provides advice on preparing for a career as an interpreter or translator.
